The thank you note you keep meaning to write

Almost everyone has a person they never properly thanked. Here is a simple way to finally do it.

Think of someone who changed things for you. A teacher who noticed. A boss who took a chance. A friend who showed up when it counted. A relative who kept the door open.

Have you told them? Really told them?

Most of us have not. We assume they know, or we wait for the right moment, and the right moment keeps not arriving.

Why it is worth doing

People often underestimate how much a thank you will mean to the person who receives it. We worry about sounding awkward. The person on the other end is not grading the wording. They are reading that their effort mattered to somebody.

A four-sentence note

You do not need stationery or a gift for writing. Four sentences are enough.

  1. What they did. "When I started, you spent your lunch breaks walking me through everything."
  2. What it meant then. "I was sure I was in over my head, and you made it feel possible."
  3. What it still means. "I think of that whenever someone new joins my team."
  4. Thank you. "I never said it properly. Thank you."

Send it as a card, an email, or a text. The format matters far less than the sending.

Unspoken gratitude helps no one. Said out loud, it becomes a gift to both of you.

If the person is hard to reach

Sometimes the person has moved on, or is no longer living. Write the note anyway. Read it aloud, or share it with someone who knew them. Gratitude does good work in the person who feels it, too.

Make it a small habit

Once the first note is sent, try one a month. Twelve people a year will learn that something they did made a difference.

Try this today: choose the person, set a timer for five minutes, and write the four sentences. Send it before you edit it too much.

If this helped, pass it on to someone who could use it today.
